Setting Up a Project Management Office

Posted by Pinnacle Management Systems, Inc. on Wednesday, May 27, 2009

The role of a Project Management Office (PMO) differs greatly across industries and companies; there is no standard PMO model for ensuring success.  The most effective PMO structure closely supports a company’s corporate culture, its’ business needs and current Project Management capabilities.  This means that a Project Management Office must evolve along with its’ customers need and capabilities.

Responsibilities of a PMO can range from providing support functions for the project management community to directly managing projects.  Generally PMOs provide some combination of:

  • Project management guidance and mentoring to project managers in the organization
  • Developing Project management processes and methodology and working to get these adopted by the organization
  • Developing and delivering Project Management training
  • Centralizing the ownership and management of Project Managers
  • Selecting, implementing, maintaining and supporting project management, portfolio management and resource tools for use by the organization
  • Providing Reports or Analytical analysis of Project, Portfolio and Resource information to the organization
  • Developing and maintaining the companies Roadmap for implementing and improving an organization’s Project Management capabilities.

Building a PMO that is right for your organization requires an understanding of your current PM capabilities and your organizations ability to absorb change.  A good Roadmap for implementing a PMO must be based on sound and effective Project Management practices and be related to the pains that your organization needs to resolve.

Pinnacle has the breadth of experience to help you chart the way.  If you are a small group and simply need help in defining a Roadmap to establishing a PMO we can help.
