Oracle Financials and Earned Value Management

Written by Pinnacle Management Systems, Inc. | Tuesday, August 31, 2010

ERP and General Ledger systems like Oracle Financials play an important role in EVM Systems.  Pinnacle has implemented EVM Systems that are integrated with Oracle Financials to provide essential information for EVMS cost and performance analysis.

We recently completed an implementation that included Oracle Financials, Microsoft Project, Deltek Cobra and Deltek wInsight.  Our client, Cobham LLC is a subcontractor on a major NASA program.

In an EVMS implementation Oracle Financials will provide critical information such as:

  • Time reporting information
  • Purchasing information including actual costs
  • Supplier actual and estimated actual costs
  • Subcontract invoices and costs
  • Other Direct Costs
  • Travel Costs
  • Overhead Costs
  • General Administrative Costs

This information is extracted from Oracle Financials and then input into EVM tools such as Primavera Cost Manager, Deltek Cobra, Deltek MPM, etc.

Pinnacle has used a number of different methods to extract the data listed above.  Often this is a simple extract using Excel that the EVMS Administrator updates into the EVM Cost Engine on a monthly basis.

In addition to determining how to integrate Oracle Financials with other EVM tools, there is almost always a need to adjust processes and level of detail to correctly capture information.  The most common area that needs to be refined in Oracle Financials is the timesheet information.
