What is Microsoft Office Project Server?

Written by Pinnacle Management Systems, Inc. | Friday, January 13, 2012

Microsoft Office Project Server is a high end EPM tool that enables organizations to manage and direct projects and resources across the enterprise. It supports project teams in collaborating and in managing their project documentation and deliverables.

Microsoft Office Project Server leverages Windows SharePoint Services as its foundation, and uses Web Access and Microsoft Office Project Professional as client applications. Project Server stores project information in a database allowing information to be analyzed and managed centrally.

The main components used in a Microsoft Office Project Server implementation are:

  • Microsoft Office Project Professional - When connected with Project Server Project Managers can create project plans, assign resources to work on tasks and then publish the plan information to the Project Server where team members can view and update it.
  • Microsoft Project Web Access - Web Access provides a view into the information stored in Project Server. Team members and project stakeholders can view and analyze project and resource information. If they are authorized they can also update information. Project-related documents, issues and risks are also accessible via Web Access.
  • Microsoft Office Project Server - This serves as the central repository for project information, resource information and also supports the collaboration features of Office Server. Project Server is integrated with Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) to support document management and issue and risk tracking. Shared project workspaces are created for the participants to view information through the Web. Project deliverables are managed with version control and document check-in/check-out.

Project Server is a potential fit for any organization that is dedicated to implementing Enterprise Project Management. If you have a strong presence of dedicated MSP users, or your IT department is a Microsoft shop then Project Server needs to be on your shortlist.
