Through all this experience, we've helped our clients solve many problems relating to the management of projects, programs, products and people. Sometimes, the challenges have been relating to single projects, where the client needed help in implementing improved project management processes or wanted better or more effective tools. In the last 10 years, though, our work and our focus has expanded to include enterprise- or program-wide project management challenges. Examples include:
Enterprise Project Management (EPM)
A major telecommunications company wanted to deploy an improved project management platform, including both standardized processes and improved tools, along with a method for reporting and analyzing performance across their worldwide project portfolio.
- Pinnacle helped them design the processes, tools and training and then deployed them over 40 project and program teams in over 20 countries. We helped define standard reporting and review processes to improve enterprise visibility.
- The client reported major improvements in their ability to effectively manage projects, to compete for business and to ensure project profitability. They told us they "never could have done it" without our help.
Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS)
A major aerospace contractor needed to overhaul its EVMS processes and systems to satisfy its customers, to meet ANSI EVMS guidelines and to improve internal management capabilities. With over 20 major internal programs, complex cross-functional process issues and numerous systems to integrate, they turned to Pinnacle for help.
- With help from our partner PMA, Pinnacle helped them define and document an improved EVMS process that and worked with project teams to tailor the process to meet unique requirements.
- Pinnacle helped the client select and implement a new suite of enterprise project management and earned value management tools, in this case from several vendors including Primavera and Deltek, and then helped them integrate the new tools with internal labor, material, manufacturing, procurement and financial systems, including SAP.
- The client has reported significant improvements in project management and EVMS processes, and they have gained credibility with their customers for their dedication to PM and EVMS best practices. They passed a recent Integrated Baseline Review (IBR) with flying colors, demonstrating that the new processes, tools and training are taking hold in the organization.
- The client has retained Pinnacle as a close partner for ongoing improvements to their EVM processes and systems and for support to their project teams. We're working now on an on-line process repository and on improved Risk Management processes.
Project Portfolio Management (PPM)
A large Federal Government agency was spending vast amounts of time and money on their internal IT and software projects. They needed a way to identify where this time and effort was being spent, to assess the alignment with agency strategy and priorities and a process for determining which projects should be resourced, and and what level, over time.
- Pinnacle first helped them implement project time reporting across the IT enterprise, then added Enterprise Project Management (EPM) to provide management with 360-degree view of where time and effort was being spent. We then implemented a Project Portfolio Management (PPM) discipline to give the client a means to evaluate and adjust investments according to the return on investment of these projects and alignment with agency priorities.
- The client reported drastic savings in IT spending and, just as important, much better value from IT due to improved alignment with agency strategy and objectives
